Earthrise (40-part version)

40-part version (for eight SATBB choirs)

25 Mins

A substantial choral work celebrating ‘Earthrise’, the first photograph of the Earth taken from space. The image has become an icon of both the beauty and the vulnerability of our planet. In an extended meditation on this icon, the music falls into three main sections: the dramatic, rhythmically-compulsive portrayal of “Man’s constant drive to explore and exploit”; the awe-struck, mystical “Contemplation of the Earth seen from space”; and the radiant, deeply-moving “Plea for true wisdom and understanding”. Man’s hubristic claim to dominion over the Earth has led us to the brink of environmental catastrophe. What can we do? The scientists can give us the facts and figures, but the arts have a vital role to play by helping to engender an emotional bond with our common home. With its environmental theme Earthrise appeals particularly to young people in student and youth choirs, but the flexibility of its different versions makes it accessible for choirs of all ages and sizes who relish the challenge of a serious subject, in a form which connects to audiences at a deep emotional level.
