Description

First performed by the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, conducted by Ralf Otto, on 1 December 2000, Christuskirche, Mainz, Germany

Commissioned by the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz

Aditus (Latin: approach, admission, entrance, audience, beginning) is a kind of overture, a six-minute concertante opener. It is based on the chromatic scale which, as the piece develops, is gradually stretched and juxtaposed with another series; this latter is characterized by the interval progression 1112336332 (1 = semitone, 2 = whole tone, 3 = minor third, etc.). The initial impulse comes from the brass and tubular bells, though this is suffused three times by an iridescent string texture. Only then does an ‘active’ rhythm come to the fore. The rhythmic section builds through polytonal harmonies to a climax, before dissolving into a colourful spectrum of sound.
