... Once Upon a Time

for Ensemble

10 Mins

First performance: July 1980, Lontano conducted by Peter Wiegold, Lyons Concert Hall, York

…Once Upon a Time was written between January and March 1980, and received its first performance the following July in York by LONTANO.

The title refers to musical time as ruled by generalised structural procedures. Although it sounds in one continuous movement, the work is in two parts, the second being formally homologous with the first. Pitch, densities and tempi are all arrived at by generalised procedure. Woodwind, brass, and contra-bass are stratified into separate (temporal) layers and these break down preceding transition and at the climax.

The players are asked to avoid the more usual chamber music blend and the discursive flow of the piece is systematically interrupted by material of a more explicit expressive nature, the resulting spaltklang is of complex heterophony. At one level the piece is about the natural tension or ‘struggle’ between structure and aggregate or discourse and expression. Beyond the notion of opposites, however, musical time is explored in terms of coincidence through the beautiful and exciting metaphysics of unity.
