First performance June 1988 by Clare College Choir under Tim Brown at the Clare College Chapel, Cambridge.
A setting of a poem by the metaphysical poet George Herbert (1593-1633). The text contrasts the transience of earthly beauty with the permanence of spriritual virtue which, "though the whole world turns to coal, Then chiefly lives."
