Arboretum Op. 12 (12 Klavierstücke)

12 Klavierstücke op. 12

Helge Jung

Helge Jung (1943–2013) studied composition, piano, bassoon and conducting at East Berlin’s University of Music, including with Rudolf Wagner-Régeny. After graduating he wrote film music, taught music theory and aural training, and worked as an editor in music publishing. Alongside this, he built an active performing career at home and abroad as an ensemble conductor and choral repetiteur, working with the Berlin and Leipzig Radio Choirs and Leipzig’s St Thomas Choir, amongst others, and creating many recordings. After 1990 he was primarily active as a concert manager. The twelve pieces in his cycle Arboretum Op. 12 were inspired by different tree species and completed in 1972.

Throughout its long and eventful history, Edition Peters has consistently sought to support contemporary music, making it accessible in high-quality scores. The years in which Germany, and the publishing house itself, were divided between East and West form an important chapter in the company’s story. The output of composers from the East German firm – then known as VEB Edition Peters, Leipzig – forms a unique and valuable part of the company’s identity and, more widely, of European cultural history. Their works are compositionally and aesthetically diverse, while sharing a communicative creative drive. The artistic independence of the music created in East Germany between 1949 and 1990 makes this repertoire well worth rediscovering.
