Tyshawn Sorey signs with Edition Peters

Edition Peters is delighted to announce that composer and multi-instrumentalist Tyshawn Sorey has signed an exclusive world-wide publishing agreement with the New York firm, beginning with the publication of five works in February of 2022.
Described by the New York Times as 2020's composer of the year, the Newark-born musician has produced a wide-ranging, heterogeneous body of compositions, variously incorporating dense rhythmic complexity, high-flown lyricism and astringent dissonance. His highly acclaimed and prolifically recorded work as a jazz composer, bandleader and performer is intertwined with a growing catalogue of music written for many of America's most celebrated classical ensembles and soloists. In recent years, Tyshawn Sorey has composed for the Detroit Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Louisville Orchestra, and the Seattle Symphony; for the International Contemporary Ensemble the McGill-Hall Trio, PRISM Quartet, and TAK Ensemble; for soprano Julia Bullock, tenor Lawrence Brownlee, flautist Claire Chase, countertenor John Holiday, violinist Jennifer Koh, pianist Conrad Tao, bass-baritone Davóne Tines, and cellist Seth Parker Woods. Institutions presenting his work have included the John F. Kennedy
Center for the Performing Arts, the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center, the Ojai Music Festival, and by Opera Philadelphia in partnership with Carnegie Hall. Alarm Will Sound's studio recording of For George Lewis, Sorey's tribute to a musical mentor and collaborator (and now, fellow Edition Peters composer), was hailed as sublime by the New Yorker. Tyshawn Sorey was the recipient of a 2015 Doris Duke Impact Award, a 2017 MacArthur Fellowship, and a 2018 United States Artists Fellowship. He has taught and lectured at the Banff Center, the Berklee College of Music, the University of Chicago, Columbia University, the Danish Rhythmic Conservatory, Harvard University, the Hochschule für Musik Köln, the University of Michigan, the New England Conservatory, and Wesleyan University. In 2020 the University of Pennsylvania named him Presidential Assistant Professor of Music.
In Feburary 2022, Sorey will conduct violist Kim Kashkashian, keyboardist Sarah Rothenberg, percussionist Steven Schick, and the Houston Chamber Choir in the world premiere of his new work Monochromatic Light (Afterlife), commissioned for the 50th anniversary of the Rothko Chapel in Houston and of Morton Feldman's Rothko Chapel for the same instrumentation. As artiste étoileat the Lucerne Festival this summer, he will premiere a quintet for percussion and strings with the JACK Quartet and conduct his improvised piece Autoschediasms with the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra, who will also perform the premiere of Sorey's new concerto for saxophonist Tim McAllister.
