The world premiere of George Crumb’s Metamorphoses (Book II) will be available to view via livestream on Sunday 13 December (3pm ET / 8pm GMT) as part of the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society series.
This new major work for piano follows Metamorphoses (Book I), written for Margaret Leng Tan between 2015 and 2017, showcasing extended piano techniques, toy piano virtuosity and vocal theatrics in pieces inspired by Jasper John’s Perilous Night, Salvador Dali’s The Persistence of Memory, Vincent van Gogh’s Crows Over the Wheatfield and other well-known works of art.
Book II, performed here by Marcantonio Barone, comprises ten further pieces after artworks that Crumb holds dear, transforming them into sound through the piano. The composition is dedicated to Barone who has worked closely with Crumb on the premiere recordings of the Spanish Songbook and American Songbook cycles, as well as the recent recording of Yester-year. Barone released his recording of Book I earlier this year, with the release of Book II scheduled for 2021 on Bridge Records.
