Rolf Grisebach Named Chair of Edition Peters Group

Major International Publisher Rolf Grisebach to Succeed Martin Williams as Chair of Edition Peters Group
On 29 May 2020, international publishing executive Rolf Grisebach was formally appointed Chair of the Edition Peters Group, one of the world’s oldest classical music publishers. Grisebach succeeds Martin Williams, who retired after being closely involved in the business for more than 20 years, serving as Chairman of Peters Edition Ltd, London, from 2007. Three years later, Williams took on the same role for the global Edition Peters Group, whose formation from a fractured set of companies with divergent ownership marked one of the high points of his tenure. He also oversaw the return, in 2014, of the Group’s original German business to its historic home in Leipzig – a step of great significance for the company and its role in the wider cultural landscape. The Edition Peters Group benefitted hugely from Williams’s considerable senior leadership experience in the music, arts and charitable sectors, and will remain greatly indebted to him for his steadfast commitment, corporate
acumen and keen wit.

Grisebach brings over 25 years’ experience in senior leadership positions across international publishing, education, digital and culture to the role. Having graduated in business administration and law at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, he did his PhD on international copyright law at the Max Planck Institute. Grisebach’s career began at The Boston Consulting Group in their offices in Munich and London, advising media companies on their strategy and structure. He went on to work for the Holtzbrinck Publishing Group in Stuttgart and New York and, as a board member, was responsible for their higher education business in the US and Europe. Grisebach also was in charge of Holtzbrinck Ventures, a portfolio of internet investments that broadened the presence of the Group in these emerging markets. Later, as president of Pearson Germany, he extended the company’s presence in the German market, leveraging Pearson’s global capabilities in the digital space. For the last six years
Grisebach has been CEO of Thames & Hudson, one of the leading international publishers of illustrated books. He spearheaded the expansion of Thames & Hudson in Asia and the creation of a dedicated museum division during this period.

Rolf Grisebach: “I am excited and humbled to be appointed to this role at Edition Peters. The cultural and historical importance of this iconic music publishing house – ‘contemporary since 1800’ – is undoubted, playing a major role in defining the core classical and contemporary music repertoire across the world from its three offices in Leipzig, London and New York. Looking forwards, markets and consumer behaviour are rapidly changing. We need to adapt in order to stay highly relevant, with an ongoing commitment to high-quality content and building ever-stronger ties to the international music community.”

Martin Williams: “I am proud to have been associated with an historic music publisher at a pivotal moment in its story and was privileged to work alongside an outstanding team. I wish them all the best in this next, exciting chapter for the company.”

Nicholas Riddle, CEO Edition Peters Group: “Martin’s contribution to Edition Peters – particularly in the last decade, when he was heavily involved in the new architecture for the Group – has left us an extraordinary legacy upon which to build for the future. In Rolf, we have appointed someone whose experience and knowledge are perfectly attuned to the needs of the unified Group as it moves into its second decade and is reshaped in the aftermath of extraordinary COVID-19 situation we all now face.”

Tim Berg, Chair Hinrichsen Foundation: “On behalf of the Hinrichsen Foundation and the Hinrichsen family, our heartfelt thanks go to Martin for his critical role in the reunification of the Edition Peters Group in 2010, and his wise counsel and support over the years. We wish him all the best for his well-earned retirement. We are now delighted to welcome Rolf Grisebach as Chair and look forward to benefiting from the considerable experience he brings from the wider publishing industry.”
