Saunders and Beamish win BASCA British Composer Awards

In an evening hosted at the British Museum in London,

Rebecca Saunders’ string quartet, Unbreathed, received a BASCA British Composer Award in a category which also included works by composers Charlotte Bray and Robert Laidlow. Unbreathed was first performed by Quatuor Diotima at Wigmore Hall in January 2018 and has since performed the piece at ECLAT Festival Stuttgart, Festival Musica Strasbourg, Philharmonie Luxembourg, Klagspuren Schwaz, November Music, and the Library of Congress, Washington DC.

James Dillon's Tanz/haus : triptych 2017 was nominated in the large chamber ensemble category along with Oliver Knussen's O Hototogisu and the James Weeks' winning piece, Libro di fiammelle e ombre. Tanz/haus : triptych 2017 picked up an RPS Award in May this year, following its premiere by Red Note Ensemble at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in November 2017.

Roxanna Panufnik's Unending Love was up for a gong the choral category with winner Judith Weir's In the Land of Uz and Raymond Yiu's Mielo. Unending Love was premiered by the National Youth Choir of Great Britain accompanied by the South Asian ensemble Tarang and sets the poem of the same name by Rabindranath Tagore.

Sally Beamish was honoured at the ceremony by receiving the “Award for Inspiration” presented in association with the MPA. The award represents peer recognition for her major influence on other composers.
