International Opera Awards Finalists Announced

Winners announced on 9 April 2018

Finalists have been announced for the 2018 International Opera Awards with Sebastian Fagerlund’s Autumn Sonata and Arnulf Herrmann’s Der Mieter shortlisted in the World Premiere category.

Fagerlund’s Autumn Sonata, with a libretto by Gunilla Hemming adapted from Ingmar Bergman’s film of the same name, premiered with the Finnish National Opera and reflects on human choices, hidden conflicts and the possibility of forgiveness. The lead role of Charlotte was specially composed for Anne Sofie von Otter and was the first time she had appeared on the Finnish National Opera stage.

Premiered by Frankfurt Oper, Herrmann's Der Mieter is based on Roland Topor's novel Le locataire chimérique. Unlike the book (and the film adaption by Roman Polanski, The Tenant), however, Händl Klaus’ libretto concentrates on the nature of being forced to conform to the extent that one's freedom to move and act

Garsington Opera also features amongst the finalists in the Education & Outreach category. As part of their programme this year, Roxanna Panufnik’s Silver Birch, with a libretto by Jessica Duchen, saw over 180 people from the ages of 8-80 from the local community bring the opera to life alongside professional artists.

Winners of the 2018 International Opera Awards will be announced at a red carpet ceremony on Monday 9th April at the London Coliseum.
