Inspired by the timeless themes of war and the relationships affected by it, Roxanna Panufnik’s new people’s opera, Silver Birch, draws upon Siegfried Sassoon's poems and the testimony of a British soldier who served recently in Iraq, to illustrate the human tragedies of conflicts past and present.
With a libretto from writer Jessica Duchen, Silver Birch is a celebration of music, drama, poetry and dance and brings together professional singers with 180 members of the local community. Designed to appeal to everyone from age 8 upwards, Karen Gillingham, Creative Director of Garsington Opera's Learning & Participation programme, directs and Douglas Boyd will conduct.
Hear Roxanna on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune on Thursday 27 July at 4.30pm
Tickets for the production are available from the Garsington Opera website.
