James Dillon Guest Composer At Time Of Music Festival

28/06/2017
4 - 9 July 2017
Organised annually and taking place in Viitasaari, Finland, Time of Music Festival (Musiikin aika) focuses on cutting-edge contemporary music, and is fast gaining an international reputation as a courageous, border-breaking and innovative event.

This year sees James Dillon as the featured guest composer, with performances of his music and masterclasses taking place throughout the week. Quatuor Bozzini performs his Third String Quartet on 5 July, followed the next day by Talea Ensemble presenting New York Triptych, a work which the ensemble commissioned and premiered at Darmstadt in 2012. The third of three related triptychs (after The Leuven Triptych and Oslo/Triptych), the 40 minute work was hailed by the Guardian following its 2013 UK premiere at hcmf// as being among his finest work yet.

On 8 July, pianist Noriko Kawai performs The Book of Elements, a collection of five volumes, each between 15 and 17 minutes in duration. The title refers to a double reading of the term ‘element’: first (as in chemistry) an ‘irresoluble substance’ and secondly (as in the ancient belief) in the elements as the ‘foundation’ of everything, reflecting the irreducible musical elements and motivic material from which Dillon constructs the individual volumes. Volume 5, premiered by Nicolas Hodges in 2002, was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Chamber-scale Composition in 2003, and the complete recorded set was released on NMC, performed by Kawai, the following year.

As well as Dillon, other familiar faces gracing this year’s festival include Juliet Fraser and Mark Knoop, and it promises to be a memorable occasion.
