Sebastian Fagerlund projects for 2016/17

Throughout 2016 Fagerlund will be working on a number of projects including a new orchestral work for 2017 commissioned by the Finnish RSO, Gothenburg SO and Galicia SO; and a new opera titled Autumn Sonata based on the film by Ingmar Bergman and commissioned by the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki. The premiere will feature Ann Sofie von Otter in the leading role with stage direction by Stephane Braunschweig.

A new record on BIS will be released in 2016 featuring his Bassoon Concerto Mana and he will be the Amsterdam Concertgebouw’s composer-in-residence for the 16/17 season - more news on this residency will follow shortly.

Sebastian Fagerlund - Clarinet Concerto, UK Premiere

Sebastian Fagerlund is one of the most significant Finnish composers of the younger generation. His works have already appeared in the programmes of a great many important festivals.

Fagerlund’s Clarinet Concerto has, since its premiere in 2006, already received a number of performances. On 9 March the UK premiere of the work took place in London, at the Barbican Hall. The soloist was Christoffer Sundqvist, for whom the work was written; the BBC Symphony Orchestra was conducted by John Storgårds.

The composer writes predominantly orchestral works; his musical language is fluent and distinctive, with an ever-present propensity for craftsmanship. This is apparent also in the Clarinet Concerto; the work evinces an uncanny and startling virtuosity from both soloist and orchestra.

The BBCSO performance will be broadcast at a later date. A recording from BIS records can be heard here:

Premiere of Stone on Stone for amplified cello and ensemble

A new work by Sebastian Fagerlund for amplified cello and ensemble receives its world premiere at the Helsinki Music Centre on 14 January 2013. Stone on Stone was commissioned by the Finnish Arts Council for cellist Markus Hohti who presents the first performance.

"The name of the piece refers to heavy, large stones or rocks and the friction and tension they create when the stones grind against each other. From the friction new musical material emerges which during the piece evolves and develops. The starting point that pushed the compositional process in to motion was Markus Hohtis interest and specialization in pedal controlled electronic effects. This inspired me to search for solutions were the  amplification and electronic effects would naturally continue and enhance the fysical aspect of playing and producing sound. The musical imagery develops from these, in a sense brutal and straightforward, sound-worlds and spreads throughout the ensemble.

The instruments in the piece are divided into four groups:  1.Trp,Ob,Eng.hn, Bsn.  2. Trb, Perc,Piano.  3. Amplified vc + electronics.  4. Cl in Bb, Cl in A, B.cl., Hn.

Though the cello functions as sort of a "master of ceremony" it is at the same time just as much part of the interaction between the instrumental groups." Sebastian Fagerlund

UK Premiere of Clarinet Concerto on 9 March 2013

Sebastian Fagerlund's highly successful Clarinet Concerto comes to the UK in March as part of the BBC Symphony Orchestra's Total Immersion featuring new and recent Scandinavian music. The work will be performed by the work's dedicatee Christoffer Sundqvist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by John Storgårds. Further details and tickets via the BBC website.
