Pavane (for two voices, flute & piano):
We learn from the preface that Fauré’s reason for adding optional vocal (or choral) parts to his famous ‘Pavane’ was rather capricious. Nonetheless, it appears that this haunting scoring came to be a favourite of the composer. Sir Adrian Boult recounts an informal occasion when the composer took part in a rendition for 2 voices, flute and piano. This recollection prompted Roy Howat to make the present transcription.

This beautifully presented and extremely practical publication, prepared by the French music expert, Roger Nichols, offers Fauré’s most famous song in three alternative keys: C minor (the original key), D minor and Bb minor. As documented in the preface, recordings made by singers who worked with Fauré define a more ardent, urgent tempo and mood than we may be used to in later performances. As well as the standard French words, the original Tuscan text is also included
