`Today I finished the Fantasy - and the sky is beautiful, there's a sadness in my heart - but that's alright. If it were otherwise, perhaps my existence would be worth nothing to anyone'.

Chopin wrote these moving words in a letter to Julian Fontana on completing one of his most important works-the Fantasy in F minor, Op. 49.

The facsimile of the autograph Stichvorlage for the Leipzig firm of Breitkopf & Härtel is the tenth volume in the series Works by Chopin. Facsimile Edition (series no.A XI/49). It comes with a scholarly commentary by Professor Mieczys?aw Tomaszewski. The original manuscript is held in the National Library in Warsaw under the shelf-mark Mus. 228 Cim.
