Details:  Hardback Facsimile Edition published by The Fryderyk Chopin Institute, Warsaw

The third volume in the series Works by Chopin. Facsimile Edition is a facsimile of a single-page autograph Stichvorlage of the Mazurka in A flat major, Op. 7 No. 4, held at the Warsaw Music Society under the shelf-mark WTM 14/Ch, inventory number 941. Accompanying the facsimile is a source commentary by Andrzej Spóz.

The autograph of the Mazurka in A flat major, Op. 7 No. 4, now being published is the first version of the work and dates from the youthful period in the composer’s oeuvre. The manuscript bears the note Pisane przez Fr. Chopin w r 1824 / Kolberg [Written by F. Chopin in 1824 / Kolberg], which is the only confirmation of the date of the work’s composition. It is not certain which of the Kolberg brothers inscribed this note (Oskar or Wilhelm), although there is much to suggest that it was Wilhelm.

The manuscript is written on a small sheet of fine paper, which the composer probably folded into four and enclosed with a letter, not familiar to us today, sent to Wilhelm Kolberg. The latter is believed to have written the above-mentioned note, possibly some years later, associating the year of the hypothetical letter with the date of the work’s composition.
